Ecometrix is expert in the field of atmospheric chemistry and the metrology of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and, in particular, industrial emissions resulting from combustion and incineration processes. The organisation has developed an innovative, high performance sampling methodology that is particularly suited to complex gaseous matrices.

Our Core Business
Ecometrix specialises in the metrology of industrial gaseous effluents, particularly volatile organic compounds (VOCs) originating from combustion processes normally found in industrial areas such as:
  • Petrochemistry
  • Metallurgy
  • Industrial chemical processes
  • Biomass to Energy procedures

Industrial effluents: complex gaseous matrix

  • Elevated temperatures (200-1200°C)
  • High relative humidity (100% in most cases)
  • High molecular diversity and elevated concentrations of molecular species
  • Presence of solid particles
  • Presence of corrosive gaseous species in mostcases
Ecometrix develops flexible analytical solutions that are particularly well suited at dealing with the issues mentioned above.

Ecometrix solutions:

SPME (Solid Phase Micro Extraction)
This technique was first developed for water analysis, and was then adapted to gaseous sampling where its use is extremely well suited. The principle lies in the exposition of a solid fibre to the gaseous matrix in order to physically adsorb a representative sample of the chemical species present in the matrix on the solid phase. Such a method ensures a simplification of the sampling procedure, particularly by avoiding the need to handle and store high temperature gases, as well as avoiding the use of organic solvents.

Tracer molecule identification
In order to replace the commonly used TAR protocol that involves the analysis of a huge set of volatile compounds (i.e. tar), Ecometrix is currently developing an innovative identification process, in which only certain specific compounds belonging to the three main classes of tar are chosen and analysed. The behaviour of these tar samples are representative of the much larger mass from which they have been taken, resulting in an estimation of the total tar concentration in the overall sample.
